Oishi, a Japanese fusion restaurant just off UT’s campus, gets 4 stars on Yelp with reviewers praising their high-quality and fresh sushi, good service and great prices. The happy hour, when all sushi rolls are half price, is also a big hit. Owner David Wong moved to Austin from Philadelphia, where for more than a decade he was a gourmet sushi chef. Still relatively new, the restaurant serves a variety of sushi, sashimi, as well as standard and specialty rolls, including shrimp tempura, tiger eye, Philadelphia and California heat. They also serve hot plates such as roasted salmon, seared tuna and mango chicken.
Find this hidden gem on the first floor of Dobie Mall (the tall building on Guadalupe and 21st streets). It is open M-F 11am-9pm and on the weekends from 4-9pm.
Today for $5 you can choose either a Longhorn roll (crab meat, avocado, cream cheese all fried tempura style) or a chicken teriyaki plate which comes with broccoli. Both choices also come with a miso soup.
